For such a little “island”, Alameda's Bay Farm Island packs a lot of things into a tiny space. Originally an island in the San Francisco Bay, it is separated from mainland Alameda by an estuary, but is connected via a sturdy draw bridge used daily by busy residents. Landfill connects it today to Oakland.
Early pictures of the island reveals many small farms–often called “truck farms” growing all manner of crops. Two major productsleaving the island were asparagus and, surprisingly, oysters from the nearby oyster beds.
As new homes were being built in the mid-20th century, one by one, the farms slipped away. Today the island has the small, comfortable Harbor Bay Shopping center, the Chuck Corica 36 hole golf course,
two elementary schools, and a large complex of office and retail buildings, one of which houses the Oakland Raiders football team.
It also houses Harbor Bay Isle, which a home to many unique and stylish home developments,each with its own architectural concepts. While it may house all of these many new places, it’s name continues to remind one of its humble history.
