Incredible weather, and varied East Bay Regional parks further enhance the beauty and character of this great city. Some of the best regional parks that California has to offer, are right in your backyard, should you choose Oakland for your home.

Where Is Oakland?

Oakland is centrally located within the greater San Francisco Bay Area, with easy access to the popular surrounding cities that make up the metropolitan area . It is directly across the Bay from San Francisco, and is immediately south of both Berkeley and Emeryville.  Oakland shares a western border with Alameda along the scenic Oakland estuary.  Along its northern and eastern border, Highways 24 and 13 provide direct access to the amazing resources available just over the Oakland hills in Contra Costa County, that feature the home town ambiance of Orinda, Lafayette and Walnut Creek.

As with any large city, Oakland has an outstanding commute system in place, should you want to travel to any of the adjacent cities listed above.  Besides a busy bus system, and the encircling and effective freeway system, one of the most popular sources of transportation is the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) with multiple stations throughout Oakland, and adjacent cities.  The central Amtrak station at Jack London Square is the site for many commuters north to Sacramento or south to Silicone Valley.  Oakland Airport is user friendly, and the second largest airport in the Bay area.  11 million passengers use the flight services of 14 different airlines, to fly all over the world.

What To Do In Oakland

There is no doubt that many of the major things to do in Oakland center around the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Complex, which houses the Oracle Arena (home of the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors), and the Coliseum, (home of the ever popular Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics).  Fans come year round to see these teams compete among the top athletic teams in the nation.

Many of the most exciting activities take place in the downtown area during the month, and many of the busiest occur at Jack London Square.  Sitting next to the dramatic Oakland estuary, there is something going on every day here.  Besides a variety of popular restaurants that includes Scotts's Seafood, the handsome Yoshi's Oakland, Kincaids, you will find the colorful Plank Restaurant, with it associated entertainment complex that is popular with all ages.  Also featured on the Square is the Sunday's Farmer's Market and the Second Saturday events- all of which feature an outstanding and inviting mix of food and artisan vendors, music and entertainment.  Taking advantage of the nautical theme, you can rent kayaks here to quietly paddle up and down the colorful history estuary, or take a handsome ferry boat to San Francisco, or tour the Bay aboard FDR's former presidential yacht-the Potomac. Oakland downtown is exceedingly lucky to have two historic and  dramatically renovated theaters nearby--The Fox Oakland and the Paramount.  These have been stunningly updated, and are an ideal site for entertainment, plays, and concerts year round.

One of the most popular event every month is the First Friday's Festival in mid-town.  Every first Friday, galleries, artists, street artists, musicians and performers are on hand to create a delightful atmosphere for friends and family.  Supplementing these presentations is the Oakland Art Murmur which includes, then, and over the weekend, art walking tours.  The outstanding Oakland Museum of California supplements this First Friday activity, and holds a family friendly open house with lots of activities to add to the fun.  This museum is designed to represent the culture, art, science of California in a wide variety of venues and activities during the year.

Combine just a few of these activities above with the delightful shopping, stores and restaurants of the Rockridge, Montclair or Lake Merritt neighborhoods, and you should find something to keep you engaged any day that you choose. [ Back To Top of Oakland page]
