Montclair is located in the hills above Oakland, and is a very popular neighborhood within the city. It begins just at Highway 24 and Park Boulevard, and has a small village atmosphere, and delightful shops, stores and restaurants for its residents.
The higher one drives up the hills, the more sweeping the panorama of Oakland and the San Francisco Bay. Houses are tucked in every conceivable spot, and are designed to capture canyon heights, marine views, or forest glens. The designs are as varied as the surroundings, many with as much glass as possible to bring nature indoors for daily enjoyment. From cabins to huge modern mansions, almost every style of architecture is represented.
Another highly popular appeal of the hills is the "Tahoe atmosphere". Instead of driving 3-4 hours to the mountains of Lake Tahoe, the atmosphere is replicated here with pine, redwood and manzanita trees. Mountain style peaked roofs are scattered throughout the area. Hawks, squirrels, opossum, raccoons wander throughout the hills on a daily basis, yet 15 minutes away is the busy downtown area.
The business district of Montclair, or the “Village”, is centered around the intersection of Mountain Blvd. and La Salle Ave. With a Safeway, Lucky’s and an abundance of great restaurants, shopping, and service related businesses, the village has something for everyone. Nearby neighborhoods include Piedmont and Piedmont Pines, each of which has its own appealing characteristics that add to the whole hillside ambiance.
