The Allendale Neighborhood of Oakland is one that truly deserves the name “neighborhood”. It fits in comfortably with the long-established and popular collection of neighborhoods that surround it- Laurel, Dimond, and Maxwell, and is well liked by those that live there. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets are especially appealing, and many homes have additional gardens and backyards filled with long-established fruit and evergreen trees that add to the charm. Allendale is ideally located for those who would like an efficient commute system, and want to be centrally located enough to enjoy all the pluses of being surrounded by other appealing hometown neighborhoods. Bounded on the west by 35th Avenue, and on the east by High Street, and topped by Highway 580, there is always a direct path to anywhere in Oakland, San Francisco, San Leandro or Contra Costa County via Highway 580 or Highway 13 further up the hill. High Street also leads directly to Highway 880, and from there, south to San Leandro, Hayward, Fremont and, ultimately, San Jose. For those who prefer not to drive to work, buses along nearby MacArthur Boulevard furnish connections directly to BART, or into downtown Oakland. Additionally, once in downtown Oakland, a commuter can take a ferry directly from Jack London Square into San Francisco.


Allendale is close to the both the Laurel and Dimond neighborhoods which furnish residents some of the most popular and varied shopping and dining spots in the area. Some of the top shopping choices are the Farmer Joe’s Marketplace, Safeway, The Food Mill, and The Laurel Bookstore. Food choices include La Farine French Bakery, The Fists of Flour Pizza Company, Everett and Jones Barbecue, and the well-reviewed Vientien Café.
One of the highlights of both the Dimond and Laurel neighborhoods are their annual street fairs. In late September, the Dimond District offers the family-friendly Oaktoberfest that features more than 200 craft beers, food, and entertainment. Not to be outdone, the Laurel neighborhood hosts The Laurel Street Fair and World Music Festival. Also family oriented, it is a community fundraiser, has free admission, and offers art, dance, and foods from all over the world.
Other family-friendly activities just off nearby Highways 580 and 13, include visits to the nearby Oakland Zoo, Chabot Science Center, and the Redwood Heights Recreation Center. Additionally, there are numerous parks and trails among the same hills that surround these facilities, and Allendale boasts its own Recreation Center.
The list of things to do would not be complete without a trip downhill to the Oakland Coliseum Complex which hosts the Oakland Athletics, The Golden State Warriors, and The Oakland Raiders.


Allendale has its own primary school in the immediate neighborhood, and the Allendale Recreation Center is immediately adjacent to it. Up 35th Avenue and along Highways 580 and 13 are Merritt Community College, Holy Names University and Mills College.
