If you have been to Oakland's waterfront recently, you have no doubt seen the beginning of what is planned to be an amazing revitalization of the whole area south of Jack London Square.  This development is Brooklyn Basin, and promises an amazing mix of residential and retail that should completely revive much of the presently sadly neglected areas of Oakland's waterways.

The picture above presents Brooklyn Basin as it will be seen when completed in the next 3-4 years.  It is estimated to cost over one billion dollars, and encompasses 64 acres.  13 buildings of residential housing will be developed here.  Sixty to seventy percent of this housing will be for sale, and 465 of the units are going to be below market rate.  Of the projected 3100 units, there will be a mix of apartments, condos, live-work loft spaces, and townhomes.  This will be a huge step forward to relieving the severe housing shortages in the immediate Bay area.

Housing is not the only element being developed.  In order to attract visitors and tourists to this handsome site, there will be 200,000 square feet of retail space, which will include a wide variety of small shops and larger stores that should prove exciting and appealing to locals and tourists alike. Restaurants are planned along what will be called the "Central Promenade" that will line the area along a renewed Clinton Basin.  A brand new marina with slips for 200 boats will return the area to it's earlier boating history.

The developers have made a strong commitment to return the waterfront area to the city.  Fifty percent of the project will be devoted to open space.  There will be 30 acres of parks, public trails, and renewed wetlands within the final plan.

With more residential housing growth projected within the Jack London Square area, and the steady growth of Oakland's Uptown neighborhoods, the future looks quite bright for those who want to enjoy all the city has to offer along the watefront.
