The Sequoyah Hils Community
The name Sequoyah Hills came from the development of an expensive housing tract next to the club bearing that name. The Oak Knoll Country Club went bankrupt during the 1930's, and was abandoned until the beginning of World War ll, when the Navy, looking for a badly needed hospital site in the area, purchased the site, and the surrounding property, and built the very large and comprehensive Oakland Naval Hospital.
As the war years wore on, and different needs arose for the Navy, they sold off the land to developers Eichler, and Brown and Kauffman in 1964. From that time through 1971, homes were built and developed to meet the needs of the growing Oakland population.
The neighborhood boundaries are Skyline Boulevard above, and Mountain Boulevard below. This neighborhood is almost entirely gracious family neighborhoods, or sweeping hills and trees. The most prominent feature through much of the area are the amazing views of the Bay area and surrounding hills. Skyline Boulevard homes are famous for their wall to wall views. This neighborhood is also famous for the very small collection of classic 20th mid-century Eichler homes, which are still very much in demand by admiring buyers.
Additionally stunning homes are found in the nearby Skyline-Hillcrest Estates neighborhood, and the Montclair hills.
The hills, trees and meadows of Chabot Regional Park above, and the Knowland State Arboretum on the south, provide miles of walking trails and picnic grounds. Lastly, and very much admired, is the vital and popular Oakland Zoo, which sees visitors of all ages from all over the Bay area.
