Fourth Street Neighborhood Highlights
In fact, Fourth Street has been stretching and growing for a while. Originally a home to light industrial warehouses and businesses, it began to draw artists and incubating businesses in the 70's and 80's. New concepts in art and design followed. One could buy creative and imaginative clothing, art, and furniture, then books, children's clothing, and handsome and useful kitchen accessories. Restaurants and coffee shops sprung up to serve the needs of the resourceful shopper. Sturdy chain stores like Restoration Hardware and Crate and Barrel added their reasonably priced products to the mix.
Homes and condos have been built in and around the area to serve the needs of the young metropolitan couples who are comfortable in this area of Berkeley. Older homes and apartments are being upgraded to attract future buyers. Change is, and has been, the theme for Fourth Street.
