If you want your Oakland home to stand out among the competition, you will want to make it attractive and memorable.  To do that,  take some basic steps that can, with a little planning, be reasonable financially, and can cause your house to be remarkable.  Although I will have suggestions to help you get ready for your Open Home, here are some basic concepts that work well:

1. Create Outstanding Curb Appeal--This means refreshing your front yard, trimming trees and bushes, planting flowers and weeding gardens.  Don't stop there, however.  With a little bit of paint, touch up the front door (consider an attractive, contrasting color) and window trim.  Add new house numbers, and upgrade your outside porch lamp.  This first step is extremely important because most potential buyers will drive by your home, and if it is unappealing, they may not consider it enough to inquire further.

2. Create a Light and Open Atmosphere--The first view of your home should be one of openess and space.  Buyers are interested in both, since they want as much useful space as they can afford.  Take an inventory of each room, and remove furniture and other items that make it appear crowded or smaller than it really is.  Remove distracting books and posters, exercise equipment, toys, pet beds, etc., and keep all walkways free and open.  Select paint with an eye to this bright concept, make plans to clean and paint as many rooms as possible.

3. Focus on The Details--Take a walk through the home, and fix small things before opening your home to buyers.  Make sure that all the lights work, and are bright and attractive.  Check to see that all door locks works.  Check the kitchen thoroughly to avoid missing or mismatched pulls, and make sure all the cabinet and closet doors shut correctly.  Clean all appliances thoroughly.  Fix any leaky faucets anywhere in the house.
Keep in mind that when the details are not attended too, buyers can often wonder what else has not been dealt with.

The time and money spent on most of these things are well worth the investment, and can make your home distinctive among your competition.
