Actually, the question should be "Why not choose Oakland?". As a city, it's central location on the coast makes an ideal departure site for nearby San Francisco or busy San Jose.  It is short distance from scenic coastal towns like Monterey or Mendocino, or the nearby wine country of Napa and Sonoma counties.
Looking for your own personal scenic views?

feb_2009_044_400The hills above Oakland gives you a panoramic view in every direction. Enjoy water sports? The Oakland estuary offers everything from small kayaks to sailboat racing on weeknights, to the bright white Coast Guard cutters making ready for long offshore trips.
Enjoy mountain views?  The Claremont and Montclair neighborhoods have streets lined with ecalyptus, pine, manzanita and fir trees, causing you to mistake the area for Lake Tahoe.

Want to enjoy music or the arts?  The Oakland Museum of California, the Mills College Art Museum, the Oakland East Bay Symphony or the Oakland Asian Cultural Center will most certainly provide that opportunity.

Children's activities include the very popular Children's Fairyland, the Chabot Space and Science Center, the Rotary Science Center and the Junior Center of Art and Science, and of course, the wonderful Oakland Zoo.

Jack London Square is the heart of a great deal of social life.  Surrounded by handsome restaurants sitting on the estuary waterway, it has a very successful Farmer's Market each Sunday, a ferry vessel stop to take you to San Francisco or any of the other popular cities that ring the bay.  Movies and shops and parking allow one to spend a whole day in just that one location.

Oakland downtown is being revitalized daily with new condominiums, artists studios, shops and restaurants of every style and taste.  The monthly Art Murmur/First Friday events draw thousands downtown each month to enjoy the area, and discover new artists and venues.

There is so much more to do in central Oakland, but one of the highlights is the activity around Lake Merritt.  Walkers and joggers are seen daily using the popular trail around the lake.  This path gives view of handsome apartments and a rich variety of office buildings. A gondola service is available complete with a singing gondolier!

So, once again, why not choose Oakland as your next place to live?  I'll be glad to give you even more reasons!
