Actually, the question should be "Why not choose Oakland?". As a city, it's central location on the coast makes an ideal departure site for nearby San Francisco or busy San Jose.  It is short distance from scenic coastal towns like Monterey or Mendocino, or the nearby wine country of Napa and Sonoma counties.
Looking for your own personal scenic views?

feb_2009_044_400The hills above Oakland gives you a panoramic view in every direction. Enjoy water sports? The Oakland estuary offers everything from small kayaks to sailboat racing on weeknights, to the bright white Coast Guard cutters making ready for long offshore trips.

The city of Oakland has more than 100 neighborhoods--some are quite big, and some are surprisingly small.  Each is unique in character, history and home design.  In some areas, there will be homes that are entirely single family ranch, while in others, they are super modern, and sit atop a high hill with unfettered views of San Francisco.  Some neighborhoods offer a rich cultural history, and others brag about their very unique shops, stores and restaurants.

To get you started on your search for a home or condominium, I have created a list of some neighborhoods that may interest you. While there are more, of course, this should give you a strong sense of your many choices.  DISCOVER OAKLAND NEIGHBORHOODS & HOMES FOR…

Redwood Heights is a beautifully located neighborhood with a pleasant variety of architectural styles and designs among its homes.  Originally begun in the 1920's, the styles include Tudor, Mediterranean, Spanish Stucco, and Mid-Century Modern properties.  It is just moments from very busy Montclair shopping district, a short trip to downtown Oakland, and sits just moments from historic Joaquin Miller Park.  Jogging, walking and hiking are available on trails in the hills above, and the Redwood Heights Recreation Center offers classes and fun for children through seniors.  Many homes have views of San Francisco and downtown Oakland.

Mediterranean-style home at 630 Kenwyn Road on Haddon Hill in Oakland

Oakland's smaller hillside neighborhoods can be easy to overlook, but they contain some of the city's most interesting residential architecture. 630 Kenwyn Road is one example—a Mediterranean-style home on Haddon Hill that combines substantial interior living space with outdoor areas and a location close to Grand Lake and Lake Merritt.

When this property was originally featured on BruceWagg.com in 2014, it was marketed as a remodeled home of more than 3,500 square feet with four bedrooms and 4+ bathrooms. Rather than viewing the property simply as an old listing, it provides an interesting look at the larger homes, hillside settings and architectural character buyers can encounter in this part of Oakland.

Haddon Hill's location is a significant…

Montclair Community Park and the walkways along Moraga Avenue are going to be well attended to this Sunday, January 19th, when Montclair residents and their friends will be joining together to make the park as attractive as possible in a special one day event.  The plan will be to clean and clear overgrowth of plants and trees, remove debris and trash from the area, and generally promote the pleasant parklike atmosphere of the area.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m at 6300 Moraga Avenue, this is promoted as a community wide event, and refreshments will be provided by local merchants like Crogan's Montclair, Crown Wines and Spirits, Starbucks, Colonial Donuts, and many more.

Participants are asked to bring gloves and pruning tools or shears, and an…

You are searching for just the right Montclair home, and have already looked at a lot of houses.  Perhaps you are getting discouraged.  What you want, you may not be able to afford, or it might not be roomy enough.  To search effectively, it is time to take a break from the many good and bad choices that you may be making, and begin to focus. Here are some tips to help:

1.DETERMINE THE "MUST HAVE" ELEMENTS FOR YOUR FUTURE HOME--This may take some time, because there may be a lot of these to start with.  But, with some serious consideration, a list will develop that isolates these items for you.  It may start with a special school district-a real "must have", or it may be a minimum of 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, or a larger backyard.  Whatever the…
